Remove location from iPhone photos before sharing.
A photo or video can carry details about where and when it was made. Check the saved information and choose what to share before sending it.
Quick answer: In Photos, open the item, tap Share, then Options. Turn off Location, tap Done, and share. This changes the copy prepared for that share; it does not remove the location from the library original.
Check what information is saved
- Open the photo or video in Photos.
- Swipe up or tap the Info button.
- Review the map or location, date and time, device details, and any caption shown.
Apple’s photo and video information guide explains what can appear and how to adjust saved dates or locations.
Remove a location already saved in Photos
- Open a photo or video, tap the More button, then tap Adjust Info and Adjust Location.
- Tap No Location to remove its saved location.
- For multiple items, tap Select, choose the thumbnails, then follow the same controls.
Apple’s guide to managing location metadata also explains how to stop Camera from collecting location for future photos: go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera and choose Never. That setting affects future captures; it does not edit items already in your library.
Turn off location for a share
- In Photos, select the items and tap Share.
- Tap Options near the top of the share sheet.
- Turn off Location, tap Done, then choose the destination.
Apple notes that shared photos and videos can include associated information such as date, time, device, location, and captions. Turning off Location removes location data from that share where the control applies; it does not scrub every other detail or change the original. If you turn on All Photos Data, Apple says the recipient gets the original with edit history and metadata, which can include location. Choose that only when you intend to share the original and its extra data. See Apple’s instructions for sharing photos and videos for the available options. If you send with AirDrop, also see how to limit AirDrop receiving and review each transfer.
Check the copy you are sending
- Look for the Options control each time you share; do not assume an earlier choice changed the original or every app’s export flow.
- Inspect the recipient copy when the destination lets you preview or download it. A visible landmark, sign, reflection, or caption can reveal a place even without embedded coordinates.
- If you want an item out of the main Photos view, that is a separate action: see how Apple Photos’ Hidden collection works.
If you are considering a separate private space for imported photos and files, read what happens to the original when you import it first. Ego is in development for iPhone; its public App Store release has not launched. Read the current product and availability details, and do not assume importing edits location metadata or removes the source copy.
