Delete private photos and attachments from iPhone Messages.
Photos and videos you send or receive in Messages can stay on your iPhone long after the conversation ends. Removing attachments from your side does not recall what someone else saved.
Quick answer: Open the thread, tap the contact or group name, choose Photos (or another category), tap Edit and Select, delete the items you no longer want, then confirm. For a wider cleanup, use Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages. Deleted items stay in Messages Recently Deleted for up to 30 days unless you remove them there. Deleting on your iPhone does not remove copies on a recipient’s phone or in their backups.
Delete photos from one conversation (iOS 26)
- Open Messages and select the conversation.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Photos (or another category such as Links or Documents).
- Tap Edit, then tap Select.
- Select the attachments to remove, tap the delete button, then confirm.
Apple’s delete messages and attachments guide describes this flow and notes that deleting messages or attachments on your iPhone does not change what recipients see on their devices. You can also touch and hold a single bubble or attachment, tap More, select items, and delete them from the thread.
Review large attachments across all threads
- Open Settings, tap General, then tap iPhone Storage.
- When Messages appears in the app list, tap it.
- Open categories such as Top Conversations, Photos, or Review Large Attachments, select items you no longer need, and delete them.
Apple’s iCloud storage guide explains that texts and attachments can use iCloud space when Messages in iCloud is on, and that removing attachments you do not need can free storage. Saving an attachment to Photos with Save creates a separate library copy; deleting the message attachment does not remove a photo you already saved elsewhere.
Empty Messages Recently Deleted
- In Messages, tap Edit in the conversation list (or the menu control your iPhone shows).
- Tap Recently Deleted.
- Select conversations or attachments to remove permanently, tap delete, then confirm.
Apple states that deleted messages and attachments remain in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days and can be recovered during that window. Permanent deletion from this folder cannot be undone. If you use Messages in iCloud, deleting a message or attachment on one signed-in device removes it from your other devices using the same Apple Account; it still does not delete anything on someone else’s phone.
Limit how long conversations are kept
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then tap Messages.
- Scroll to Message History, tap Keep Messages, and choose 30 Days or 1 Year instead of Forever if you want older threads removed automatically.
Apple warns that choosing anything other than Forever removes entire conversations, including all attachments, after the selected period. Review threads you might need before changing this setting. Automatic deletion applies on your devices; it is not a way to erase what a recipient already stored.
Before you treat Messages as private storage
- Messages is a communication app, not an encrypted vault. Attachments may appear in notifications, search, shared-device previews, and backups depending on your settings.
- Recipients can save, screenshot, or forward what you send. See what happens when photos leave your iPhone through AirDrop or the share sheet.
- Deleting a thread attachment does not remove the same image from Photos, Files, a shared album, an iCloud Shared Photo Library, or an import you saved separately. Read what happens to originals after import, Shared Album boundaries, and Shared Library vs personal library.
- Apple documents finding attachments from the conversation info screen in its Messages overview, including save, copy, share, and delete options for individual items.
Ego is in development for iPhone; its public App Store release has not launched. When available, it is designed as separate device-encrypted vaults on your phone, not a replacement for Messages delivery. Exporting or sharing out of an unlocked vault is intended to require explicit confirmation because the copy leaves Ego’s encryption. Read current product and availability details; clearing Messages does not encrypt photos that remain in Photos or on someone else’s device.
